PRESCHOOL EDUCATION PROGRAM CANONSBURG-PA

Our preschool Language Arts curriculum takes an approach to fundamentals such as letter recognition, understanding, letter writing, sound matching and the introduction to sight words. Group activities, which contains books, alliteration, repetition and vocabulary. Expressive and receptive language skills are developed through story interpretation, group games and activities and journal work.

As preschool students are ready for more advanced math concepts, we introduce problem solving based upon understanding and development of skills like estimating, understanding visual data in charts, concepts of currency and the function of rules. At the same time, mathematical tools such as rulers are scales and introducing the essential role of math in everyday life.

Preschool students are introduced to a variety of art materials, tools and techniques, as they participate in hands-on projects with a focus on the creative process and experience rather than the final product. The creative process strengthens cognitive skills as students make choices and watch what results occur. Sharing with others learning respect for classroom materials. In addition, children create their own personal art while learning about the art of other famous artists.

Filled with hands-on experiments, our Science curriculum teaches students to ask questions, make predictions and investigate and formulate their own answers. Focusing on the natural world around us—water, plants, animals and weather—lends context and immediacy to these explorations. Additional studies in nutrition and recycling provide lessons in caring for oneself and for the planet.

This program incorporates expressing oneself through movement, acting out stories and role-playing. The elements of our movement, music & theatre curriculum enhancing confidence, development of imagination and the creative skills of communication and interaction with others.

Students explore the fundamental experiences of feelings, friendship and families, teamwork, helping others, solving problems and learning more about themselves and their community. The focus is always on developing social and emotional confidence. Family traditions and cultures are presented and commemorated to create an understanding and acceptance of diversity.
